Tips to Help Get Rid of Wasps

During the warmest and most enjoyable seasons of the year, wasps become the biggest problem. They appear in the spring and summer and revert to their infamous behavior in the late summer and early fall when they dive-bomb into soda cans and raid picnics and barbecues.

Even though wasps can be beneficial by eating crop-eating insects, they cause the biggest problem when they sting, especially if you’re allergic, and no one wants a wasp sting this year.

We’ve got a few tips you can implement to prevent and treat wasps on your own, as well as when you know it’s time for professional involvement, that will help keep your family safe this wasp season.

Prevention

Fake nests called wasp decoys work well to keep territorial wasp species from coming by. You can either buy these online or make one yourself. To create your own, stuff a paper lunch bag with plastic bags and mark one corner with a black dot the size of a quarter. Tie the top off with string or rubber bands and hang one in every corner of the eaves and anywhere wasps usually come, such as near woodpiles or sheds.

Make your home less appealing to wasps by covering compost piles, garbage cans, and any food you bring outside until ready to serve. Wasps also will look for standing water and any spilled food or soda, so clean up messes outside and make sure water drains well from the yard.

Some wasps build nests in trees or under eaves, and others build nests in abandoned holes left behind by gophers, groundhogs, or moles. Search for any holes in the ground and fill them to prevent yellow jacket nests.

Prevent wasps from coming inside the home by replacing and repairing damaged screens around windows and doors. Wasps like to hang out in the heat, so the sunniest side of the house, usually the southwest side, so make sure all the screens, windows, and doors on that side of the house are especially secure.

Home Solutions for Wasps

Although decoys might work well to keep some wasp species away from your home and yard, some species will ignore them, including the bald-faced hornet. Preparing a few remedies beforehand could save you serious wasp trouble.

Although decoys might work well to keep some wasp species away from your home and yard, some species will ignore them, including the bald-faced hornet. Preparing a few remedies beforehand could save you serious wasp trouble.

Before trying to treat wasps on your own, first determine whether you’re allergic to wasp stings. If you are, never try to treat wasps on your own, but avoid serious risks by seeking professional help. If you aren’t allergic and want to try treating them on your own, wear thick protective coverings, including gloves, long sleeves and pants, a hat, and a bandana or scarf to completely cover your neck on all sides. There are also bee suits you can purchase online. No matter what protective gear you wear, there’s always the possibility of getting stung, so always be careful.

A few natural remedies work well against wasps, including peppermint oil, geranium, clove, and lemongrass oil, which are all proven to work against wasps. Use 1 drop of oil for every 1 cup of water and mix them in a spray bottle. You can use any or all of these essential oils if you want, but just make sure to use pure essential oil and not extract. Spray the mixture in the eaves, areas wasps usually show up every year, and any place you don’t want wasps snooping around. Just be aware that this spray won’t kill wasps on contact, just keep them from certain areas.

As a kill-on-contact agent, you can mix regular grease-fighting dish soap or insecticide soap with water in a hose attachment. Spray the nest from a safe distance with a powerful stream, which should take them down right away. However, there’s always the possibility of getting stung, so be careful.

There are also over-the-counter (OTC) products available for use against wasps, which you can buy online or at a hardware store. No matter what product you use, make sure to read the label carefully and thoroughly before you use it. Using a product contrary to its label could cause health problems and is illegal.

Professional Wasp Removal

Many people try all these things without getting the results they’d like. If you’re wondering if you should call the professionals, it’s probably a sign you should call.

When wasps have made a nest inside the walls somewhere, treatments on your own could make them burrow into the house, break through the walls, and fly around inside. So, if you see wasp activity in the siding and you can’t see a nest, it could be time to call the pros.
